Fractures may occur due to:

• Abnormal loading
  • Single traumatic overload
  • Cyclic loading which does not overload but prevents healing
    • ie stress fracture

• Decreased strength due to underlying pathology
  • Tumors
  • Disease (osteoporosis)
  • Lack of use
    • Adaption to load demand – prolonged bed red, paralysis, reduced gravity environment, stress shielding by an implant
