18.5 Interpolation functions

In structural mechanics:

  • The displacements of a body (due to loads) are often unknown

  • Loads are often known

  • The challenge is to find the displacement that satisfy the loads (subject to a material response)

  • Most quantities of interest are thus derived from or related to the displacements (ie strain, stress)

To approximate the displacements, we interpolate them from the degrees of freedom.
