23.31 Gleno-humeral movement

  • Three movements are possible

    1. Sliding

    2. Translation

    3. Rolling

  • In the vertical plane

    • The instantaenous center of rotation remains close to the center of the humeral head

  • In the horizontal plane

    • The head remains central – motion is principally rotation-sliding

    • Some translation occurs towards the read

    • Additional translations can occur if there is sapulo-ligamentous or rotator cuff deficiency
